My journey to balance personal and family life

Time management is a puzzle we all try to solve at some point in our lives. For me, it’s been an ongoing challenge, especially when it comes to striking a balance between personal time and family commitments. Lately, it felt like I was losing the battle against the clock, constantly racing against time to get things done.

Enter my trusty Apple Watch and the friendly assistance of Siri. With its timer function and scheduling capabilities, my Apple Watch has become my knight in shining armor, helping me keep a running tally of my time and commitments. Without it, I would probably be perpetually late for everything, including something as basic as getting to the shower on time or managing my breaks while juggling work and my online shop.

However, I recently had a moment of realization. While I was using technology to assist me in managing my time, I wasn’t fully present in the moment. I was writing this blog while my family sat at the dinner table, waiting for my engagement. It was a wake-up call. I needed to reevaluate my approach to time management.

My solution? It’s simple but profound: focus on being present. This week, I’ve made it my mission to be mentally and physically present in everything I do. Here’s how I’m working on it:

  1. Prioritizing and Scheduling: I’m learning to prioritize tasks and allocate specific time slots to them. Instead of trying to do everything at once, I’m breaking my day into manageable chunks, giving each task or commitment my undivided attention.
  2. Mindful Transitions: I’m creating transition periods between activities. Whether it’s switching from work to family time or from personal tasks to my online shop, these moments of transition help me mentally prepare for the next activity, ensuring I’m fully present when I start.
  3. Quality Over Quantity: I’ve come to realize that being present doesn’t necessarily mean spending more time with family or on personal pursuits. It’s about the quality of the time spent. So, when I’m with my family, I’m actively engaged, and when I’m working, I’m laser-focused.
  4. Self-Care: I’m also scheduling self-care into my routine. Taking time for myself allows me to recharge and be more present when I’m with my family or working on my online shop.
  5. Regular Check-Ins: I’m regularly assessing how I’m doing with my newfound commitment to being present. Am I still slipping into old habits? Am I effectively managing my time? These check-ins help me stay on track.

While my Apple Watch and Siri are fantastic tools for time management, the real magic lies in my conscious effort to be present. It’s a work in progress, but each day, I’m taking steps toward better time management and a more balanced life.

If you’re struggling with time management like I was, consider giving this approach a try. Embrace the present moment, and you might find that it’s the key to achieving the balance you’ve been seeking all along.
